A Brief History of Chai Tea

When your pour a cup of chai tea, you’re treated to a delicious experience. A creamy blend of honey, vanilla, black tea, and exotic spices, it’s a wonderful and relaxing drink whether served hot or cold.

In addition to being a mainstay on countless menus, chai tea has an interesting history that goes far beyond your local coffee shop. In fact, it’s been around for over 5,000 years. According to legend, chai tea made its debut in the ancient courts of Siam and India, created by a king who used it as a cleansing drink with healing powers. The first chai tea, known as masala tea, was made with a range of spices, didn’t contain any tea leaves, and was actually caffeine free.

That all changed in the early 1900s, when the Indian Tea Association, owned by Britain, arrived in India, bringing with them a deep, cultural love for black tea. The locals began to combine black tea with masala chai to stretch the ingredients, since black tea was very expensive and hard to get. Soon this hybrid drink, known today as chai tea, was more popular than ever.

Now chai tea is a favorite beverage all over the world, and there are many variations on how its prepared and served. In the US, chai tea has received a lot of attention from chains like Starbucks and Teavana, as well as brands like Tazo.
